At least one person was killed and several others sustained injuries in an explosion at a Cricket stadium in Pakistan’s northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province on Saturday, police said.
It is learnt that the blast occurred while a match was being played in the stadium.
According to news agency PTI, the explosion was reported at Kausar Cricket Ground in Khar tehsil of Bajaur district.
Bajaur District Police Officer Waqas Rafique said that the explosion was carried out through an improvised explosive device (IED), Dawn newspaper reported. Children were among the injured, police said.
According to media reports, police have confirmed that the IED explosion was a targeted attack. A video of the incident, which has since gone viral, shows people fleeing the scene as thick plumes of smoke rise in the background.
Security officials believe the attack may be linked to terrorist groups retaliating against Operation Sarbakaf, a counter-terrorism campaign launched by security forces several weeks ago, India Today reported.
Just last month, on August 14—Pakistan’s Independence Day—the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) launched coordinated gun and grenade assaults on police stations, checkpoints, and patrols across seven districts in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. The attacks claimed the lives of six police officers.
The injured were rushed to a nearby hospital. So far, nobody has taken responsibility for the blast. More details are awaited.
At least 11 people were killed in a bomb blast during a public rally in southwestern Pakistani city of Quetta, on September 2, news agency Reuters reported, citing officials. The Islamic State militant group claimed responsibility for the attack in a statement released the following day.
Government official Hamza Shafaat said the rally was organized to mark the death anniversary of Sardar Ataullah Mengal, a prominent nationalist leader and former provincial chief minister. Reuters quoted police official Athar Rasheed as stating that initial investigations suggest it was a suicide bombing. Authorities had launched a to probe into the incident.
