US President Donald Trump on Monday reduced the 50-day deadline he initially set for Russia to initiate a truce in the Ukraine war, expressing disappointment in Vladimir Putin’s actions.
“10 or 12 days from today… We just don’t see any progress being made,” the US President said. He had earlier threatened to reduce the deadline or face “severe” economic sanctions, saying he was disappointed in Putin for not committing to a ceasefire.

“I’ve spoken to President Putin a lot. We got along really well… We thought we had it settled numerous times, and then President Putin goes out and starts launching rockets into some city like Kyiv and kills people in a nursing home or whatever. Bodies lying all over the street,” he told reporters alongside British PM Keir Starmer and his wife at his luxury golf course in Turnberry, Scotland.
“I am very disappointed in President Putin. Very disappointed in him. I’m going to reduce that 50 days that I gave him to a lesser number because I think I already know the answer to what’s going to happen,” he added, without giving a new deadline.
Ukrainian presidential aide Andriy Yermak praised Trump’s threat. “Thanks to President Trump for standing firm and delivering a clear message of peace through strength. When America leads with strength, others think twice,” Yermak said on social media.
Earlier, Trump had warned that his administration would impose 100% tariffs on Russia if Moscow and Kyiv fail to reach a ceasefire deal within 50 days. He also approved the delivery of Patriot air defence systems to Ukraine to help the country defend itself against Russian attacks.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Russia is willing to negotiate a peace, but achieving its goals remains a priority. The Kremlin insisted that any agreement must involve Ukraine’s withdrawal from the four regions annexed by Russia in 2022.
Trump has expressed frustration with Vladimir Putin, stating he’s “very disappointed” in the Russian leader’s failure to follow through on his words. Trump cited unsuccessful US-brokered talks aimed at negotiating a truce between Russia and Ukraine, which have seen little progress.
The US President has insisted the economic pain is intended to force the Kremlin to the negotiating table, calling the tariffs a necessary pressure point to end the war, now in its fourth year.
His remarks mark a significant shift in his stance on Russia and Ukraine. Initially, Trump was conciliatory towards Vladimir Putin, but now he’s expressed growing frustration with the Russian leader’s unyielding stance on US-led peace efforts and prolonging the war.
