Four people were killed in the Karak area of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa when a Frontier Corps (FC) vehicle was attacked on Wednesday.
The four killed included three Frontier Corps personnel and a driver. Sources told CNN-News18 that the vehicle was stationed for the security of local oil and gas.
Earlier in July, at least eight Pakistani paramilitary troops and four militants were killed in a clash in the country’s northwest in the latest violence to hit the restive region.
“Armed terrorists attacked a Frontier Corps (FC) convoy with heavy weapons… The fighting continued for several hours. Eight FC personnel were killed, and 11 were injured,” a senior security personnel had then told AFP.
The clash, which lasted for several hours, took place in Daburi, Orakzai district, near the Afghan border.
Pakistan has witnessed a sharp rise in violence in its regions bordering Afghanistan since the Taliban returned to power in Kabul in 2021. Islamabad accuses its western neighbour of allowing its soil to be used for attacks against Pakistan—a claim the Taliban denies.
More than 320 people, mostly security personnel, have been killed in attacks since the start of the year by armed groups fighting in both Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, according to an AFP tally.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa borders eastern Afghanistan, and the Durand Line (the disputed border) cuts through traditional Pashtun tribal territories. This porous border has historically allowed militant groups, smugglers, and refugees to cross easily. The region has been used as a staging ground or sanctuary by groups involved in the conflicts in Afghanistan, including the Taliban.
KP has been at the epicenter of Pakistan’s war against terrorism since the early 2000s. Groups like the Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), Al-Qaeda, and later Islamic State (IS-K) have operated in or targeted this region, with suicide bombings, ambushes, and attacks on schools making global headlines.
