While Prince William and Harry have inherited many of Princess Diana’s assets, neither of them will inherit her childhood home. Althorp Estate will be passed to her nephew, Louis Spencer, the eldest son of Diana’s brother, Charles Spencer. The reason behind this is an old family tradition called male-preference primogeniture, which means the eldest male in the family inherits the estate—even if he has older sisters.
In this case, despite the fact that Louis has three older sisters, including Lady Kitty Spencer, he is still the heir to Althorp.
About Althorp Estate
Spanning more than 13,000 acres, the Althorp Estate is located in Northamptonshire, England, and has been the ancestral home of the Spencer family for over 500 years, since 1508.
Princess Diana moved there with her family at the age of 14, and the place is also her final resting place, following her death in 1997.
She was buried on a small island in the Oval Lake on the estate grounds. The estate is currently managed by Diana’s brother, Charles Spencer, 9th Earl Spencer, and parts of it, including the Diana Memorial and exhibition, are open to the public during the summer months.
Althrop not only has a personal significance for the Spencer family but is also an important piece of British heritage, blending aristocratic history with a connection to the modern royal legacy.
What Did Prince William And Prince Harry Inherit From Princess Diana?
After Princess Diana’s tragic death in a car crash in Paris on August 31, 1997, her two sons, Prince William and Prince Harry, inherited her personal wealth, estimated to be around £21 million (after taxes).
The inheritance included jewellery, personal belongings, and investments. Among the most symbolic items were pieces of her jewellery, which have since been worn by their wives—Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle—including the famous sapphire engagement ring worn by Kate.
