A man in the US has been arrested after allegedly deliberately dropping a two-year-old toddler from a second-storey balcony.
The incident took place on August 16 at around 11:30 a.m. in Snohomish, Washington.
According to local authorities, officers from the Snohomish Police Department responded to reports of a man who had intentionally thrown a young child from an upper-level apartment balcony, WFSB reported.
Miraculously, the toddler survived the fall and was quickly rushed to hospital. Doctors later confirmed that the child had not suffered any serious injuries.
The 38-year-old suspect was taken into custody at the scene and has since been charged with assault and reckless endangerment.
Following the incident, the two-year-old has been placed in protective custody, and child protection services are now involved.
It is not yet clear what relationship, if any, the accused shared with the child. Police have not yet disclosed the motive behind the act, but investigations are ongoing.
In a similar case from March, a man in Wisconsin faced charges after prosecutors said he intentionally dropped a toddler from a second-storey balcony, KBTX News reported.
The child, named Stormy, survived the fall with only bruises. Her mother, Shakira Walters, said the incident began with an argument that escalated out of control.
According to a criminal complaint, 31-year-old Jaimann Eiland, Walters’ ex-husband, admitted to accidentally knocking the child over in the kitchen. That led to a heated confrontation, which allegedly turned physical. Eiland then dropped — or threw — the toddler from the balcony.
He has been charged with substantial battery and physical abuse of a child, and is currently being held on $15,000 bail.
If convicted, the child abuse charge against him could carry a maximum sentence of 12 years in prison.
