A shooting took place near the main campus of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, leaving a police officer and the suspected shooter dead.
The incident took place at 4.50 pm local time on Friday, as a gunman opened fire on the CDC from a nearby Pharmacy.
The agency confirmed that it was the target of the attack, Bloomberg reported.
The officer who responded to the shooting died in the shootout. He was rushed to a hospital with injuries, but he succumbed to his injuries.
A mother who waited for her toddler who goes to the daycare on the CDC campus recalled the fearful moment when she came to know about the shooting incident.
“It’s very scary. I am also angry that for a year and a half he [son] had to experience something like this,” the mother told CBS News in an interview.
“I’m also a bit angry that at a year and a half he would have to experience something like this… We should be able to take our kids to daycare,” said the mother of a child in the CDC campus daycare. Her wife was on her way to pick him up when she heard gunshots and the… pic.twitter.com/KOGRBQfgpm

“We should be able to take them to daycare, our spouses should be able to pick them up safely without gunfire,” she added.
Her wife heard the gunshots while picking up their child from daycare. The mother was able to speak to her wife, who assured her they were safe. She told the outlet that her spouse had texted her during the shooting but couldn’t call because they’d been instructed to stay quiet and hidden. She added that she was anxiously waiting to be reunited with them, saying, “I need to see my son as soon as possible”.
Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens assured that all children in the daycare inside the CDC campus are safe and that authorities are working to reunite them with their parents.
“I’m a parent as well. I know your uncertainty, fear, and concern have been high,” Dickens said at a news conference. He added, “We want you to know that all the children are safe, and we will make sure you are reunited with them as soon as possible.”
The suspect was reportedly found dead on the second floor of a building that houses a CVS pharmacy, located across the street from the CDC campus. Police said the suspect died from a gunshot wound, but it remains unclear whether the fatal shot was fired by officers or was self-inflicted.
