Amid the chaos of sloganeering and detentions, Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra fell unconscious during the INDIA bloc MPs’ protest march against the Election Commission of India (ECI) over the ‘vote theft’ allegations in New Delhi on Monday.
Visuals on social media showed the Lok Sabha Leader of the Opposition, Rahul Gandhi, and other fellow politicians attempting to revive both the leaders with water, chocolates, and first-aid.
Additionally, TMC’s Mitali Baugh also fell unconscious during the protest.
Congress MP Sanjana Jatav was taken to RML Hospital after she fainted during the opposition’s protest.
High-voltage drama unfolded on the streets of the national capital as around 300 opposition MPs, including Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi, SP’s Akhilesh Yadav, marched to the Election Commission office over the ‘vote theft’ allegations.
The Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition was among multiple leaders and MPs who were detained by Delhi Police on their way to the poll body’s office. The other opposition leaders detained were Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut and TMC MP Sagarika Ghose. The parliamentarians were taken to the Parliament Street police station.
The police said that all the MPs were released after two hours of detention.
Videos on social media also showed Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav jumping the barricades as other opposition leaders continued their march from the Parliament House to Nirvachan Sadan.
The protest was held days after Rahul Gandhi accused the poll body of colluding with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) during the 2024 Lok Sabha and other assembly elections to “steal votes”.
The INDIA bloc leaders launched a protest after senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh on Sunday addressed a letter to the Election Commission of India (ECI), underscoring that Opposition MPs intended to collectively hand over a memorandum, not merely send a small delegation.
In the letter dated August 10, Ramesh, writing on behalf of political parties in Opposition in Parliament, informed the Chief Election Commissioner that all Opposition MPs would stage a peaceful march from the Parliament House to Nirvachan Sadan on August 11 after 11.30 am.
