US President Donald Trump has again claimed that he intervened in the India-Pakistan conflict in May to prevent a nuclear escalation, asserting that he got “things settled” between the two nations. Speaking at a trilateral signing ceremony of a peace pledge with the presidents of Azerbaijan and Armenia at the White House, Trump also claimed that “five or six planes” were shot down during the conflict.
After the signing of the accords, the leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan also stated that they would nominate Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize for the historic agreement.
Speaking at the ceremony alongside the leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan, Trump said, “Today’s signing follows our success with India and Pakistan. They were going at it. They were going at it big. And they were great leaders that came together just prior to what would have been a tremendous conflict, as you know, a nuclear conflict probably.”
This is not the first instance where Trump has claimed credit for brokering a truce between India and Pakistan. He has been making such statements since May 10, when hostilities between the two countries calmed down. Indian officials have repeatedly rejected these claims.
Air Chief Marshal AP Singh confirmed on Saturday that the decision to implement a ceasefire was a unilateral move by India, not the result of any external mediation. During a lecture in Bengaluru, the Air Chief stated that the conflict was “a high-tech war” that had inflicted so much damage on Pakistan’s military infrastructure within just 80 to 90 hours that the adversary was compelled to seek a truce. “They came forward and sent a message to our DGMO that they wanted to talk,” he said, confirming that the ceasefire was a result of Pakistan’s military leadership initiating backchannel de-escalation.
He also confirmed that the Indian Air Force shot down at least five Pakistani fighter jets and one large aircraft, in addition to damaging key airbases and command centres. The military objectives achieved during this short, decisive operational window forced Pakistan to its knees, indicating that India halted the conflict by choice, not compulsion.
