US President Donald Trump on Monday announced to raise tariffs on Indian goods over the purchase and sale of Russian oil.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said India is not only buying massive amounts of Russian Oil, but also selling it for big profits in the open markets. He said India does not care how many people in Ukraine are being killed by the “Russian War Machine.”
Trump had earlier imposed 25% tariff on India and an unspecified penalty for buying Russian crude oil and military equipment. However, he did not specify how much he would increase the tariff.
“India is not only buying massive amounts of Russian Oil, they are then, for much of the Oil purchased, selling it on the Open Market for big profits. They don’t care how many people in Ukraine are being killed by the Russian War Machine. Because of this, I will be substantially raising the Tariff paid by India to the USA. Thank you for your attention to this matter!!!” he wrote.
Trump, who has been raising questions over India-Russia ties, last week said he does not care how much business New Delhi does with Moscow.
Last week, the US President announced to impose a 25 per cent tariff on all Indian goods, citing India’s high tariffs and continued military and energy ties with Russia.
However, the Indian government has not taken any retaliatory step so far and said it is studying tariff implications. The government said it will take all steps necessary to secure India’s national interest.
In a statement on July 30, the Commerce and Industry Ministry said India and the US have been engaged in negotiations on concluding a fair, balanced and mutually beneficial bilateral trade agreement over the last few months.
“The Government attaches the utmost importance to protecting and promoting the welfare of our farmers, entrepreneurs, and MSMEs. The Government will take all steps necessary to secure our national interest, as has been the case with other trade agreements including the latest Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement with the UK,” read the statement.
